It could be any number of things including allergies, lack of a bath (or too many- he needs one about once a month), his food, etc...change one thing at a time and see if you can figure out the source. My dogs back always itches and when we brush him with a brush he sheds a lot but then smells really bad?
The skin around the dead hair is dead and will stink the best thing I know of since my dog sheds alot and also smells bad is I first brush him really good then vacuum him I do this on a daily basis in the summer. about once every 2 weeks or so I do this then give him a bath. I use regular shampoo and conditioner. and really scratch him with my nails not real hard while I rinse him to get as much hair and dead skin off of him. If his skin is dry and flaky I will use Head and Shoulders shampoo. After he is dry I'll brush him again to get more hair out. Honestly it doesn't matter what I do cause he will smell bad again in a couple days. And as he is getting older it is getting worse. Some times I will put a rinse on him like a herbal all natural body spay or something especially if I have to take him somewhere.
Could be a skin infection which is causing the shedding, itching and smell. Whenever you can 'smell' anything on an animal it usually means infection.
Vet is the only way to go on this one.
Your dog might have an allergie to your shampoo or your washing him too much wich can provide dead skin itchy skin even loss of skin! I would take your dog to the vet a.s.a.p!
