Africans using twigs to ';brush'; their teeth?

I hear that African people use tree twigs to rub their gums and teeth. What is the name of the tree(s) they use the twigs from? Do they just take the branches off as they walk by and do this or are these things bought in stores?Africans using twigs to ';brush'; their teeth?
I believe the twigs that people used for brushing were of the neem tree. Neem is known to have medicinal value. And furthermore, it's not just the Africans, but people of many other countries, who used neem for brushing. hope that helps.
